The process

  1. Create an online account
  2. Complete the online application
  3. Submit the online application
  4. Send all supporting documentation
  5. Licence approval

You can read more detail about each step below, while a list of recommended downloads is available at the bottom of this page.

Each Step Explained

Step 1. Create An Account

To do this, you must have a valid email address.  You will be required to provide contact details, as well as creating a username and password. For security purposes, a validation email will be sent to the email address that you provide.  You will not be able to proceed to the online application until you have completed this step.

Step 2. Complete The Online Application

The online application can be broken down into the following stages –

  1. Personal Details
  2. Employment History
  3. Skills & Experience
  4. Qualifications
  5. Review and Submit

Step 3. Make Payment And Submit Your Online Application

Once you have completed each step of the application process, we recommend you take time to review the information you have provided to ensure it is true and accurate.  You will be presented with a payment screen at the end of the application process.  Payment must be made before your application can be submitted.

Step 4. Submit All Supporting Documentation

Once you have made payment and provided all relevant information, a confirmation email will be sent to you with instructions on what you should do next.  Every effort will be made to process applications within 4 weeks from the date that all supporting documents have been received by the SparkSafe team.

To process your application as quickly as possible, please ensure that you submit the following supporting documentation (Supporting Documents Checklist)

Evidence of Qualifications

To help speed up the approval process, please provide us with authentic copies of your electrical and other relevant qualifications Qualification Information.  These are required before your licence can be approved. You may be asked by the SparkSafe team to submit your original certificates for verification and validation purposes.  Please note that falsely claiming to hold a qualification is a criminal offence under the Fraud Act 2006.

If you are an electrical apprentice, you need to provide a signed copy of your Personal Training Plan .  If your employer doesn’t hold copies of your Personal Training Plan, these can be obtained from your college.

Provide Photographic ID

Proof of identity is required.  You must provide us with personal photographic identification in the form of a Passport, Driving Licence or Electoral Card (a copy will be accepted if clear).

Email a Digital Photograph

Your photo is a vital part of your application.  To enable us to attach a photograph to your online Licence, please email a digital photograph from shoulders up against a plain white background enquiries@sparksafeltp.co.uk

Note:  Photos copied or digitally scanned from Driving Licences or other official documents are not acceptable.  Detailed guidance on photograph requirements can be found at www.sparksafeltp.co.uk

Employment Verification

The Employment Verification Table must be completed and returned to SparkSafe as soon as possible to ensure your application can be processed in a timely manner.  Employment verification is required, covering a minimum of 2 years.  This table must be completed by your employer(s), include details of start/end dates, job title(s) and a detailed description of the duties carried out.  The table must have a company stamp or be emailed directly to SparkSafe from a company email address.  [email to enquiries@sparksafeltp.co.uk]

Failure to submit all supporting documentation may result in a delay in approving your Licence.

Step 5. Licence Approval

You will be advised via email of the outcome of your application.  Where an application for a QE licence has been made and the full criteria has not been met, your application will automatically be approved as a REW licence where this criteria is met.  You must ensure that you log into your SparkSafe account and check for any recommendations that have been made by the SparkSafe approval team.

If you are unhappy with your licence outcome, you can appeal the decision.  Details on the appeals procedure can be found here.

Incomplete Licence Applications

If any supporting evidence or fees are missing from a licence application, the application will be put on hold. The SparkSafe team will then contact the applicant to request supporting evidence and/or fee. This contact will be primarily by email (or a phone call in the case of an underpayment).

The applicant’s details will be held on file for a period of 3 years from the date of payment.  If after this time, the supporting evidence and/or fee has not been provided by the applicant, the application will be void and cancelled. All fees submitted will be retained by SparkSafe.

If an applicant has had their application void and cancelled as outlined above, they can reapply for a SparkSafe licence with a new online application which includes submitting all necessary evidence and full payment for the licence that is being applied for.
