Anyone wishing to apply for a SparkSafe Licence to Practise must complete the online application (please ensure your internet browser is set to Google Chrome). The online application process should take around 15 minutes to complete. Every effort will be made to process all completed applications within 4 weeks from the date they are received by the SparkSafe Team. Before starting the application, we recommend that you make use of our application checklist as well as checking your eligibility for a Licence. The checklist can be downloaded for your use and referral. We have also produced an IT Requirements Guide for all users of the SparkSafe system. We recommend you read this guide before starting your application.
To do this, you must have a valid email address. You will be required to provide contact details, as well as creating a username and password. For security purposes, a validation email will be sent to the email address that you provide. You will not be able to proceed to the online application until you have completed this step.
The online application can be broken down into the following stages –
Once you have completed each step of the application process, we recommend you take time to review the information you have provided to ensure it is true and accurate. You will be presented with a payment screen at the end of the application process. Payment must be made before your application can be submitted.
Once you have made payment and provided all relevant information, a confirmation email will be sent to you with instructions on what you should do next. Every effort will be made to process all completed applications within 4 weeks from the date they are received by the SparkSafe Team.
To process your application as quickly as possible, please ensure that you submit the following supporting documentation (Supporting Documents Checklist)
Evidence of Qualifications
To help speed up the approval process, please provide us with copies of your relevant Electrical Qualifications. Please refer to the Qualification Guide. Certified evidence of your qualifications is needed before your Licence can be passed to the approval team. You may be asked by the SparkSafe Team to submit your original certificates for verification and validation purposes. Please note that falsely claiming to hold a qualification is a criminal offence under the Fraud Act 2006. SparkSafe reserves the right to revoke Licences where information or supporting evidence provided is incorrect, fraudulent or misleading.
If you are applying for an Apprentice Licence, you will need to submit a copy of your signed Training Agreement and Personal Development Plan which must state the apprenticeship framework number. We will also need proof of your registration with the awarding body. This can be obtained from your training provider.
Provide Photographic ID
Proof of identity is required for all Licence applications. This can be a copy of your valid Passport, Driving Licence or Electoral Card. Please ensure that your photographic ID has not expired.
Email a Digital Photograph
A digital photo is a vital part of your application. To enable us to attach a photograph to your online Licence, please email a suitable head and shoulders digital photograph of yourself, in front of a plain white background to email@example.com. Note: Photos scanned or copied from Driving Licences or other official documents are not acceptable. Guidance on photograph requirements can be found here.
You will be emailed an Employment Verification Table on completion of your application. It is your responsibility to have the table completed and returned to SparkSafe as soon as possible to ensure your application can be processed in a timely manner. Employment verification is required, covering at least 5 years for all QE and REW licence types. This table must be completed by your employer(s) and it should include details of start/end dates, job title(s) and a detailed description of duties carried out.
All supporting documentation can be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org or posted to the SparkSafe Team
Failure to submit all supporting documentation may result in a delay in approving your Licence.
You will be advised via email of the outcome of your application. If you have been unsuccessful in your Licence application, you must ensure that you log in to your SparkSafe account and check for any recommendations that have been made by the SparkSafe Team.
Where an application has been unsuccessful, recommendations as to how you can progress to the Licence type applied for will be made by the SparkSafe Team. If you are unhappy with the outcome, you can appeal the decision. Details on the Appeals procedure can be found here.
