When exploring electrical training courses, it’s important to look beyond the surface. Some providers make claims that may not fully hold up under scrutiny.

The Electrotechnical Skills Partnership (TESP) has compiled key red flags to help you avoid potential pitfalls and make informed decisions. We have summarised the detailed information provided by The Electrotechnical Skills Partnership (TESP) below.

🚩 Third-Party Involvement 🚩

Be cautious of statements like: “We’ll connect you with a specialist company offering trades training.” Some providers aren’t regulated to offer qualifications and subcontract others to do so. This is often hidden in the small print.

🚩Using Terms like “Professional Electrician” or “Full Scope Electrician” 🚩

Using a combination of courses may appear comprehensive, but often they mix knowledge qualifications (e.g., C&G 2365) with other qualifications better suited for professional development after you have qualified. Remember, completing such a course does not make you a “Professional Electrician.” Unfortunately, because the title “Electrician” isn’t regulated, training providers can use it freely in their marketing.

🚩 Misuse of the Term “College” 🚩

If a website offers limited details and asks for your contact info for “personalised advice,” it could lead to high-pressure sales calls. Always choose accredited training providers and confirm their approval through these links:
✅ City & Guilds – https://lnkd.in/gY_t7B3
✅ EAL – https://eal.org.uk/

🚩 Limited Information to Push You Into Submitting a Form 🚩

If a website provides minimal details and asks for your contact information to receive additional advice, proceed with caution. This is a common tactic to initiate high-pressure sales communications. Always verify the credibility of the training provider before engaging further.

🚩False Accreditation Claims 🚩

Some websites display impressive logos, but the provider may not be authorised to use them. Awarding organisations like City & Guilds and EAL regulate approved centres. Check claims via the relevant organisation’s website.

🚩Dubious Affordability Processes 🚩

Watch out for these red flags in affordability assessments:
❌ Being asked to use another persons details if you can’t pass the credit check
❌ Being told to falsify information to pass

🚩Problematic Contract Terms 🚩

Read contracts carefully and don’t feel pressured. Look for clauses in the small print that may impact your ability to complete the course. If you have concerns about a training provider, contact The Electrotechnical Skills Partnership (TESP), and they can investigate on your behalf.

By staying vigilant and researching thoroughly, you can avoid these common pitfalls and choose a trustworthy, accredited training provider that aligns with your goals. You can find more information and guidance on the TESP website – https://www.the-esp.org.uk
