This year’s entries showcased a variety of outstanding work, initiatives, and products aimed at enhancing electrical safety and standards.
After much deliberation, the judging panel selected the worthy winners, including two Highly Commended awards.
The Paul Skyrme Electrical Safety Initiative of the Year Award 2023 – South Tyneside Homes for the Safe Isolation Procedure and Danger Notification – Diverting Neutral Current Update
In honour of the late Paul Skyrme, a renowned figure in the electrical industry, the Electrical Safety Roundtable has dedicated this award to his legacy. South Tyneside Homes has been recognised for the innovative updates to its existing Safe Isolation Procedure, incorporating vital steps for the detection of diverting neutral currents and addressing the potential hazards and dangers that may arise.
Through comprehensive Toolbox Talks and engaging face-to-face presentations, South Tyneside Homes has effectively educated its workforce, equipping them with a systematic approach to identify and deal with the risks associated with diverting neutral currents.
The organisation has laid a solid foundation for the understanding, diagnosis, and testing of diverted neutral current faults, enhancing safety and operational standards.
2023 Product of the Year Award – Guardian by matt:e Limited
Launched in November 2023, the Guardian is designed to monitor a property’s electricity supply and its electrical infrastructure. Featuring the innovative O-PEN® technology, the Guardian excels at detecting faults and safely isolates, or warns of, potential issues before damage occurs.
Effortlessly integrating with existing distribution boards, the Guardian can identify critical problems such as loss of neutral and broken pen conductors. The alarm enhances electrical safety by not only detecting faults but also safely isolating them or alerting the property owner.
Changemaker of the Year Award 2023 – Mark Graham, Electrical Manager at Darlington Borough Council
Mark Graham has exceeded the standard legal requirements for a social housing provider in enhancing compliance, with is on track for 100% of housing properties to have a Domestic Electrical Condition Report (DEICR) within the last five years.
Facing changes in his role, Mark recognised an opportunity to enhance the efficiency of electrical inspections in their properties and made it his mission to ensure resources were dedicated to improve electrical safety.
Mark has achieved incredible results, with a rapid turnaround in the percentage of their increase housing stock with a current DEICR.
The 2023 Derek Thompson Industry Service Award – Awarded to Malcolm Duncan, Managing Director at Super Rod
The Derek Thompson Industry Service Award was established in memory of Derek Thompson who was a strong advocate for enhancing electrical safety and standards.
Malcolm Duncan has been honoured with this award for his unwavering commitment to promoting the importance of safe isolation. Since 2018, Malcolm, with his team at Super Rod, has spearheaded a campaign focused on improving safe isolation practices.
He has brought attention to the story of Michael Adamson and the critical need to continuously educate and advocate for safe isolation procedures. His goal is to get to point where safety campaigns are no longer needed, and that every electrician can return home safely from work, regardless of their working environment.
Highly Commended Award for Product of the Year 2023 – Aico
Aico has earned recognition for its innovative Ei3030 Multi-Sensor Fire and Carbon Monoxide Alarm. This advanced device is equipped with a thermistor heat sensor, an optical sensor, and an electrochemical CO sensor. The judges commended Aico for the Ei3030 Multi-Sensor Fire and Carbon Monoxide Alarm, acknowledging its contribution to safer electrical system practices.
Highly Commended Award for Changemaker of the Year 2023 – Bineesh Babu, Senior Manager at Mace
Through his strong leadership and proactive approach, Bineesh Babu has made a significant contribution to enhancing electrical safety in the workplace. Since assuming leadership in 2022, he has been instrumental in developing and sustaining a strong culture of electrical safety across Mace India Projects.
In recognition of his efforts within the Mace Electrical Safety campaign, the judges have awarded Bineesh Babu the Highly Commended Changemaker of the Year Award.
