Low pay is not the way!

Industry News: 28 September 2015

In addition to this false self-employment issue, SparkSafe has recently been highlighting how electricians are being offered well below the nationally determined hourly pay rate.

Recently, a building contractor instructed Jobcentre Online to correct an error relating to a vacancy notice aimed at recruiting an electrician. The wage rate on offer is now commensurate with the national determination.  The error was first pointed out by SparkSafe, with the help of Unite and the ECA. The matter was eventually amended to reflect the national industrial determination.

This is far from a rare occurrence, with a leading support services company that works extensively in both the public and sector recently advertising a vacancy for a City & Guilds 2391 qualified electrician. The salary band pointed towards an hourly rate of £9.75-£10.25 p/hr which is less than the fourth year apprentice rate of pay under 2015/16 JIB Industrial Determination.

SparkSafe is determined to continue to highlight this issue. If you see a job advertisement with these rates then please report it directly to the SparkSafe team who will raise it with the employer.
