How to apply for a SparkSafe Licence to Practice

Anyone wanting to apply for a SparkSafe Licence to Practice must complete the online application.  There is no paper based application form. The online application process has five key stages and should take no longer than 20 minutes to complete.

Before starting the online application, we recommend that you review our application checklist. The checklist can be downloaded for your use and referral.

Step 1. Decide on Licence Type

You must first decide on the licence type that you wish to apply for.  Three licence types are available – Licence to Practice for a Qualified Electrician, a Restricted Electrical Worker and an Apprentice.

Step 2. Create an account

The next step is to create an online account. To do this, you must have a valid email address. You will be required to provide contact details, as well as creating a username and password. For security purposes, a validation email will be sent to the email address that you provide. You will not be able to proceed to the online application until you have completed this step.

Step 3. Complete the online application

The online application is straightforward and can be broken down into the following steps –

  1. Personal Details – Name, address, contact number, NI/PPS number
  2. Employment History – Years’ experience in the electrical industry, current & previous employment details – at least 5 years employment details required
  3. Skills & Experience – Declaration of considerable and relevant experience in different industry environments, as well as specific areas of practical experience gained
  4. Qualifications – Electrical qualifications, H & S qualifications and any other relevant qualifications that may support your application

Step 4. Choose your payment method and submit your online   application

Once you have completed each step of the application process, you should review the information you have provided to ensure it is true and accurate. You will then be presented with a payment screen at the end of the application process –

  • Submit and Pay Online – £140

Once you made your payment and provided all relevant information, a confirmation email will be sent to you with instructions on what you should do next.

Step 5. Send all supporting documentation

You are asked to provide authentic copies of those qualifications declared during the application process (Electrical, H & S and any other additional qualifications). We will need a digital photograph of yourself, along with a copy of suitable photographic ID (e.g. Passport or Driving Licence). Please ensure you read our Photograph Requirements Guide before sending your digital photograph. This should be submitted to us as soon as possible to ensure your application can be processed in a timely manner.
