QE Licence Holders & 18th Edition

Possession of a QE Licence type provides industry clients and employers with evidence that the holder is committed to remaining up to date with current knowledge of the BS7671 Wiring Requirements.

A transitional period of six months means that the 18th Edition version will run alongside the old 17th Edition for a period of six months.  During this period, electrical contractors and clients are permitted to make use of either standard to design and install electrical services.

From the 1st January 2019, the minimum industry standard for design and installation services will become the 18th Edition.

Impact of 18th Edition on QE Licence Holders

The criterion for a QE Licence is dependent on the holder being in possession of an accredited, up to date qualification covering the scope of BS7671.

The Board of SparkSafe recognises that a separate transitional period is necessary to allow current QE Licence holders to meet the requirement of being up to date with an 18th Edition qualification.

Following consultation with the Central Procurement Directorate, we can confirm that the requirement to achieve an 18th Edition qualification as a condition for retaining a QE Licence type will be extended to 30th June 2019.

What action do I need to take?

As a QE Licence holder, you must ensure that you achieve an 18th Edition qualification.  The qualification must be achieved and certified by the 30th June 2019.  Evidence of this must be submitted and approved by SparkSafe before 30th June 2019, otherwise your QE Licence will be amended to a Restricted Electrical Worker Licence.
